A Seersucker for Corduroys

A Seersucker for Corduroys

I really am a sucker for anything corduroy. Trousers, mini skirts, jackets, hats, you name it… there isn’t anything quite like corduroy that can bring both boyish charm and retro appeal to a look all at the same time. Essentially a ridged velvet, this durable yet buttery soft fabric has the ability to hug the body in the most sophisticated yet sumptuous ways. Moreover, practically every color unequivocally becomes more rich and saturated in its corduroy form. In my closet corduroy is mostly the fall/winter equivalent to my spring/summer twill chinos. Although a cold weather staple, corduroys are also great for easing your wardrobe from winter to spring. As the weather fluctuates and we go back and forth between reaching for the puffer jacket one day and sandals the next, corduroy pieces accommodate the undecided weather working just as well with cotton tees as they do chunky knits.

The Off-Duty Blazer

The Off-Duty Blazer

Every year when it’s finally time to shed the heavy winter layers blazers and a mac trench coat are my go-to layering pieces for spring. Timeless, sophisticated, and uber chic, the hardest part is deciding between the two. A loose unlined trench coat is perfect for a more relaxed and Parisian vibe, while a blazer is best for capturing a more polished and tailored look. I wear a lot of denim and casual neutrals, so layering a third piece on top is the perfect finishing touch to add more depth. When I’m out with my boys I normally opt for the trench coat because I need all the pocket space I can get to carry keys, phones, trucks, etc…  So it happens that whenever I find myself out and about with no kids in tow I capitalize on the opportunity to sport my favorite blazers.

“Winter, Meet Spring”

“Winter, Meet Spring”

If you couldn’t tell, I am ready for spring and wearing all of the colors to prove it. I’ve been in quite the color kick lately and I truly think playing around with colors is one of the best ways to get creative with your existing closet. It’s not about going crazy and throwing on every color you own, but more so appreciating and illuminating the simple beauty in each color. Colors can, and have, been done in so many ways, and while there are certain shades that don’t require much work (hi, red <3 ) sometimes it takes a bit of refinement by way of colorblocking and textural contrasts to really make a color sing. Expanding on the sentiments in my last post of pairing winter and springtime colors for transitional weather, this time around I’m taking a more textural approach to mixing and matching winter and spring aesthetics. His and Hers

His and Hers

His and hers not in the cutesy and traditional sense, but more in a what’s yours is mine sort of way. As the youngest sibling of three wandering into other people’s closets comes quite naturally to me. Not quite an enduring quality, but an inherent tendency none the less. Now that I’m (technically) grown up and my mother and sister’s closets are about an hour drive away, my eyes have occasionally wandered over to the Mister’s closet. Fortunate for me, he is a very dapper and obliging man. Fortunate for him, my 5′ 6″ frame swims in most of his 6′ 3″ muscular build clothing, so my options are limited.

Near the end of my twin pregnancy I was practically living in his henley shirts, but it wasn’t until a couple of months ago when he put this classic navy rollneck sweater (that I’ve always loved) into our goodwill pile that I decided I had to give it a go. Sure enough, this tad too short for him sweater was just the right tunic-esque length for me. I’ve always liked the idea of tunics but had never found one with the right relaxed fit and flattering length. With my tunic query finally answered, the Mister’s closet suddenly had much bigger borrowing potential 🙂  Read More
