Every year when it’s finally time to shed the heavy winter layers blazers and a mac trench coat are my go-to layering pieces for spring. Timeless, sophisticated, and uber chic, the hardest part is deciding between the two. A loose unlined trench coat is perfect for a more relaxed and Parisian vibe, while a blazer is best for capturing a more polished and tailored look. I wear a lot of denim and casual neutrals, so layering a third piece on top is the perfect finishing touch to add more depth. When I’m out with my boys I normally opt for the trench coat because I need all the pocket space I can get to carry keys, phones, trucks, etc…  So it happens that whenever I find myself out and about with no kids in tow I capitalize on the opportunity to sport my favorite blazers.

Wearing it Now: Marigold and Pink

Every year in August when it’s practically too hot and humid to go outside I long for cold winter nights, snow days, and layers upon layers of chunky knits, wool coats, and tall boots, but come February my wind burnt cheeks, chapped lips, and freezing toes have just about had enough. I actually do really enjoy piling on the layers and getting bundled up to go outside, but thoughts of idyllic balmy spring weather (and being able to go outside without freezing my bum off) make me eager for warmer days.

Living in DC you quickly learn how to dress for in-between weather because the transition between seasons in the District is wildly unpredictable. The turnover from winter to spring is particularly fickle, putting the city in a state of limbo going back and forth between warm and cold days until the buds are blooming and spring finally sets in. It’s easy to get caught up in spring fever and all the florals tromping up and down the runway, but whether you like it or not you may very well be holed up under all of your layers for a few more weeks (at the very least.) On the upside, taking a spring attitude to your winter wardrobe by way of creative color combinations is all you need to hit refresh on your winter favorites.   Read More
